BMW M50/M52 Aluminum Valve Cover Guide: Leaks, Fitment and Installation

Fitment comes first: the Poverty Built M50/M52 cover is an M52-style single-VANOS cover for supported M50/M52/S52 combinations and may require the listed coil-position changes on M50 applications. M52TU/M54 engines use a different cover.

An aluminum valve cover can reduce the cracking and distortion risk associated with an aged plastic cover, but no cover can guarantee a leak-free engine by itself. Gasket preparation, crankcase pressure, surface condition, fastener technique, and correct engine fitment still determine the result.

Choose the correct product family

M50, M52, and M52TU sound similar, but their cover, ignition-coil, gasket, and crankcase-ventilation details are not interchangeable. Confirm the engine—not just the chassis.

Common symptoms of a valve-cover leak

  • Oil odor after driving
  • Smoke when oil reaches the exhaust manifold or heat shield
  • Oil around the perimeter of the cylinder head
  • Oil in spark-plug wells
  • Repeated gasket leaks or visible cover damage

These symptoms can have other causes. Clean the area, inspect from the highest wet point, and verify the source before ordering parts.

Why a new gasket can leak again

Crankcase pressure

A restricted or incorrectly routed crankcase-ventilation system can push oil past a new gasket. Diagnose the ventilation system and any catch-can plumbing rather than asking the cover gasket to contain abnormal pressure.

Dirty or damaged sealing surfaces

Oil, old sealant, gouges, or leftover gasket material can prevent an even seal. The aluminum cylinder-head surface must be cleaned without cutting or scratching it.

Wrong gasket or cover family

M50- and M52-style details differ, and M52TU/M54 is a separate design. Match the supplied gasket, grommets, coils, and ventilation fittings to the exact product configuration.

Uneven or excessive tightening

Overtightening does not improve the seal. It can damage fasteners or the aluminum cylinder-head threads and distort the gasket load. Tighten evenly in the sequence and to the specification supplied for the cover/engine combination. This guide intentionally does not publish one universal torque value.

Installation planning

  1. Let the engine cool and disconnect power as appropriate for the repair.
  2. Document coil, ground, harness, vacuum, and ventilation routing before disassembly.
  3. Remove the old cover without prying against delicate sealing surfaces.
  4. Clean and inspect the head surface, plug wells, fastener locations, and ventilation plumbing.
  5. Install the correct new gasket and grommets. Use sealant only at the junctions specified by BMW repair information or the supplied instructions; more sealant is not better.
  6. Set the cover down squarely without rolling or pinching the gasket.
  7. Install fasteners by hand and tighten evenly in the specified sequence.
  8. Reconnect coils, grounds, harnesses, and ventilation lines; then inspect during the first heat cycles.

M50 fitment and coil requirements

The M50/M52 product uses the M52-style single-VANOS cover and can be used on an M50 when the ignition coils are secured with one bolt, or when the engine is converted to OBD-II-style coils. Before checkout, confirm the coil mounting style, oil-fill location, ventilation plan, and accessory clearance on the actual engine rather than relying only on the chassis year.

Why the OBD-II profile gasket matters

This cover uses the molded-rubber profile gasket design associated with the OBD-II E36 six-cylinder family, including the 323, 328, and 1996-and-later M3/S52 applications. The gasket seals by controlled compression in the cover groove, making the replacement style familiar and readily serviceable when routine valve-cover-gasket maintenance is due. Correct surface preparation, gasket placement, and even fastener loading are still required.

Turbo, -10AN, and catch-can options

Dual -10AN and catch-can options can support a planned crankcase-ventilation system, but fitting size alone does not design the system. If the -10AN fitting option is selected, the factory CCV port must be plugged. Hose routing, baffling, vacuum source, drain strategy, emissions legality, and expected blow-by all matter, so plan the complete ventilation system before installation.

What aluminum does—and does not—solve

Aluminum offers greater dimensional stability and damage resistance than an old, heat-cycled plastic cover. It does not repair excessive crankcase pressure, a damaged head surface, incorrect hardware, bad installation, or unrelated oil leaks. Recheck the engine after the first heat cycles rather than assuming every odor is cured.
