How to Flash BMW MS42 and MS43 with MS4X Flasher—and What MS45 Owners Need to Know
Compatibility correction: official MS4X Flasher support is for MS42 and MS43. MS45 owners need an MS45-capable tool. Never attempt to write an MS45 file with MS4X Flasher.
BMW grouped MS42, MS43, and MS45 under a similar naming family, but their flashing support is not identical. The correct workflow starts by identifying the DME, matching the delivered file to that DME, and using the software intended for the file.

Before connecting
- Identify the DME from the case label and diagnostics. Use the MS42/MS43/MS45 identification guide if needed.
- Repair mechanical faults and communication errors.
- Install the current, trusted version of the correct software and required drivers.
- Use a quality FTDI-based K+DCAN cable and the correct vehicle adapter.
- Connect stable battery support suitable for programming.
- Disable laptop sleep and prevent updates or USB power management from interrupting the session.
Connection notes for MS42 and MS43
MS42 and MS43 have OBD programming capability, but the physical port path can differ by vehicle. Some early cars with the round 20-pin engine-bay diagnostic connector require communication through that connector using the proper 20-pin to 16-pin adapter. Some K-line cars also require the correct cable pin configuration. Follow the MS4X connection documentation for the specific chassis and interface; do not improvise jumpers.
Full read versus partial read
MS4X Flasher distinguishes between a 512 KB full image and a 64 KB calibration-area partial image for MS42/MS43. A full backup can preserve useful recovery information, while a partial file is commonly used for calibration changes. The correct write type is determined by the delivered file and instructions—not by guesswork.
Poverty Built does not require you to submit a full read unless requested. Keeping your own labeled backup is still recommended when the tool supports it.
Safe write procedure
- Verify the DME and file one last time.
- Put the ignition in the position required by the flashing software.
- Confirm stable voltage and communication.
- Select the exact write mode specified for the file.
- Do not touch the key, cable, adapter, battery support, or laptop until completion.
- Perform the tool-directed key cycle and adaptation procedure.
- Read fault memory and verify normal operation before driving hard.
Checksums and safety prompts
Use the checksum handling built into the supported tool and file workflow. Do not disable compatibility, voltage, or identification checks simply to force a write. A safety check that refuses a file is a reason to stop and verify—not a nuisance to bypass.
Boot mode warning
Boot-mode operations are advanced recovery or bench work. The MS4X documentation warns that writing an OBD-obtained full image in boot mode can overwrite ECU-unique data such as keys. Do not enter boot mode as part of a normal tune installation unless an experienced recovery process specifically requires it.
If communication fails or a flash stops
Preserve the software version, error message, DME identification, selected file, write mode, battery voltage, and cable details. Do not cycle the key repeatedly or try unrelated files. Follow the tool developer’s recovery documentation.
