BMW E46 Stage 1 vs Stage 2 vs Stage 3: Which Tune Should You Order?
The rule that prevents most ordering mistakes: configure the actual car first and choose the naturally aspirated stage second. The Tune Configurator describes the engine, DME, hardware, fuel, transmission, and requested features. Stage 1/2/3 selects the calibration level—it does not tell you which parts you must install.

Step 1: choose the correct DME product
- MS42 M52TU N/A Tune — supported M52TU applications
- MS43 M54 N/A Tune — supported M54 applications using MS43
- MS45.1 E46 N/A Tune — supported later E46 applications using MS45.1
Model year is only a clue. If the car has an engine swap or replacement DME, order for the system that actually controls it.
Step 2: complete the Tune Configurator
Select only what will be on the car when the tune is flashed. Depending on the product, that can include engine size, transmission, fuel, rev limit, idle, EWS behavior, secondary-air and oxygen-sensor configuration, DISA choices, burble/pops options, VIN, and cable or file format.

Step 3: choose the stage

Three ordering examples
Stock daily driver that wants sharper response
Select the stock engine and hardware, then Stage 1 if the OEM+ character is the goal.
Headers and intake, but the owner wants mild behavior
Select the headers/intake where offered, then Stage 1. The parts do not force Stage 2.
Mostly stock car that wants the most aggressive supported N/A level
Select the actual stock hardware, then Stage 3 if that is the desired calibration level. Do not claim uninstalled parts in the configurator.
Why turbo map-pack stages are different
Do not apply this explanation to N54 or N55 turbo map packs. Those products use stages tied to required hardware and fuel. The word “stage” means different things in those listings because the product structure is different.
What you receive—and what you do not
You receive a supported Poverty Built staged calibration configured around the submitted selections. Unless the listing says otherwise, the purchase does not include an unlimited revision process, mechanical diagnosis, or changes for hardware installed later. Flashing distinction
MS42 and MS43 use the official MS4X Flasher workflow. MS45 requires an MS45-capable flasher such as BTT MS45 QuickFlash or the dedicated MS45 Flasher when appropriate. See the complete flashing-tool guide. Poverty Built will request a read if one is needed; do not submit a full read by default.
Order checklist
- Confirm MS42, MS43, or MS45.
- Finish the hardware configuration.
- Complete every Tune Configurator choice truthfully.
- Select Stage 1, 2, or 3 for the desired N/A character.
- Choose the correct file/flashing path and use stable voltage.
