BMW MS41 Stage 1, 1+, 2 and 3 Explained
MS41 ordering in one sentence: tell the Tune Configurator exactly what engine, hardware, fuel, and behavior the car has; then choose Stage 1, 1+, 2, or 3 for the calibration character you want.
The Poverty Built MS41 product covers supported BMW M52 and S52 applications using MS41/MS41.2. The stage does not determine the parts list. The hardware selections and the stage perform two different jobs.
First, confirm MS41/MS41.2
Verify the label on the DME and confirm the identification diagnostically. A 1996–1999 North American E36 323i/328i commonly uses MS41, and the S52-powered E36 M3 commonly uses MS41.2, but engine swaps and module replacements are common enough that you should not order from the badge alone.
What the Tune Configurator controls
Choose the engine, intake manifold, MAF, injectors, cams, exhaust, fuel, transmission, and supported feature options that match the completed car. If a part is not installed by the time you flash, do not select it as though it were installed.

Suggested modifications are not requirements
Headers, an M50 intake manifold, cams, exhaust, or other common upgrades can change airflow and the result. They do not automatically assign the car a stage. Select the installed hardware in the Tune Configurator, then choose the stage separately.
Example: an M52B28 with an M50 manifold and headers can be ordered as Stage 1, 1+, 2, or 3. The manifold and headers describe the car; the stage describes the chosen calibration level.
When the product does not fit
If the engine, MAF, injectors, cams, or other major configuration is not shown, ask before buying. Do not approximate a non-standard build using the closest drop-down choice. Projects that require one-off development, repeated datalog review, or ongoing revisions should use UNDSPTD. bespoke tuning.
MS41 flashing requirements
The supported flashing path is Bimmer Tuning Tools MS41 QuickFlash. Use a reliable cable, the correct diagnostic port or adapter for the vehicle, stable battery support, and the exact full/partial write instructions delivered for the file. See How to Flash Your MS41 BMW Safely.
You do not need to send Poverty Built a full read unless requested. Save a personal stock backup when the tool supports it.
