N51/N52 Multi-Map Tune: MSV70, MSV80 and MSV80.1

Fitment first: which ECU do I have?

Not sure which ECU you have? Send David your VIN at help@povertybuilt.com and we will help identify it. If you already have an ECU identification screenshot, include it. Let us know if the engine or ECU has been swapped.

Our N51/N52 multi-map package supports MSV70, MSV80 and MSV80.1. Read the simple ECU identification guide, including how to check your VIN on RealOEM.

Three switchable maps for $380. Just $100 more than our $280 single-map tune. The Poverty Built Multi-Map Tune is for BMW N51/N52 engines with MSV70, MSV80 or MSV80.1, and can be configured for a completely stock car or a car with supporting modifications.

Only need one setup? Choose the $280 single-map tune for MSV70 or MSV80/MSV80.1. For three selectable setups, choose the $380 multi-map package.

Choose Stage 1, 2, or 3 for each map, with separate pops-and-bangs on/off and intensity settings. You can keep a quieter daily map, have a second map with a different stage or exhaust character, and use another slot for a specified fuel blend.

ECU fitment and development status

The N51/N52 multi-map package is available for MSV70, MSV80 and MSV80.1. If you are unsure which one is in your car, send David your VIN or read the ECU identification guide.

  • MSV90: in progress and not yet available.
  • MSD81 for the N53 engine: in progress and not yet available.

No release date is promised for either development.

What the multi-map package offers

  • Three selectable maps: choose the stage and exhaust settings separately for each map.
  • Factory-control map selection: switch between the installed maps using the car's factory controls, with tachometer feedback.
  • Stage choices for each map: mix Stage 1, 2, and 3, or use the same stage across multiple maps.
  • Separate exhaust settings: choose pops and bangs off or on, with independently chosen intensity for each map.
  • Two-step and rolling RPM hold: choose a fixed RPM limit or a captured-RPM profile, requested with a held Volume Up button.
  • Manual no-lift shift: a clutch-triggered RPM-control option for manual-transmission setups.
  • Fuel-specific calibrations: pump-gas maps and dedicated ethanol-blend maps prepared for your agreed fuel and setup.
  • Hardware support: stock intake manifolds, BMW three-stage manifolds, N54 manifold conversions, and intake or exhaust changes.

Once the package is installed, changing between its maps does not require another flash. Each map is prepared for the hardware actually fitted to the car.

Can I have one map for flames, one for burbles, and one for two-step?

Each map can have its own stage and exhaust settings. A three-map request like that breaks down into:

  • Map 1 — Flame-focused overrun profile: discuss your flame goal and exhaust setup with us. Visible flames depend on the setup and are not guaranteed.
  • Map 2 — Burble profile: a separate pops-and-bangs setup for a different exhaust character.
  • Map 3 — Two-step profile: a dedicated map with your selected fixed-RPM two-step or rolling RPM-hold setup.

You can use the same Stage 1, 2, or 3 calibration across the maps and change the exhaust settings, or choose different stages. Every map must match the hardware installed and the fuel in the tank.

How two-step and rolling RPM hold work

These are RPM-control options on a configured map. Hold Volume Up to request the selected mode; release the button to cancel. The map determines which mode is active.

Fixed-RPM two-step

The RPM limit is set when the map is prepared. While the request and its activation conditions are met, the ECU interrupts ignition as engine speed reaches that limit and allows it to recover below it. The aim is to keep the engine cycling around the configured target while you keep the pedal down.

Rolling RPM hold

This mode captures engine speed when the request is accepted. With the engine warm, cruise control switched off, and the pedal held down past the configured throttle threshold, hold Volume Up once RPM is above the configured entry threshold. The captured RPM becomes the target and stays fixed while the request remains active.

Example: if the entry threshold is 3,000 RPM and you activate the feature near 4,200 RPM, the captured target is approximately 4,200 RPM. The 3,000 RPM setting determines when activation is allowed.

What you should hear and feel

The intended result is that RPM stops climbing and the engine cycles against the limit, producing the sharp, repeated “bang-bang” exhaust note of an ignition cut. Volume and character depend on the exhaust and map settings. Engine load can pull RPM below the target; the cut then backs off.

Release Volume Up or lift off the pedal to end the rolling request. A timeout, unsuitable engine conditions, or a protection request can also end it. The supplied instructions cover the activation conditions for your chosen profile.

Stage 1, Stage 2, and Stage 3 explained

The stage describes the calibration level and driving character. Your installed parts and fuel are specified separately. A three-stage intake manifold is a physical part; fitting one does not automatically make the car a Stage 3 tune.

Stage 1 — OEM+

A mild setup focused on response, smooth power delivery, and a familiar daily-driving feel. This is a straightforward choice for someone who wants to start with a stock car and keep the driving character close to factory.

Stage 2 — Performance

A more assertive naturally aspirated calibration for someone who wants a stronger performance focus. It can be prepared around stock hardware or your intake, manifold, and exhaust changes.

Stage 3 — Maximum N/A

Our most comprehensive naturally aspirated preset for the platform. It is prepared around the hardware and fuel you specify. A build aimed at getting the most from this calibration benefits from a coordinated intake, manifold, and exhaust combination.

All three stages can be configured around stock hardware. The power available still depends on the engine, its condition, the fuel, and the parts fitted.

What mods do I need?

You can start with a stock car. The package can be prepared for the factory intake, manifold, and exhaust. Tell us how the car sits now so the tune matches it.

If you are building toward more power, these are the supporting parts to discuss:

  • Cold-air intake: a properly designed intake with an outside-air feed is supported. List the intake you are running when you order.
  • BMW three-stage intake manifold: supported, including cars being converted from the original manifold. Tell us which manifold is installed.
  • N54 intake manifold: supported as an alternative manifold conversion. Choose the manifold that suits your build and have the calibration prepared for it.
  • Headers and exhaust: include the header type, catalytic converters, and the rest of the exhaust in your setup details. These affect both airflow and how the pops sound.

A healthy engine comes first. Sort out misfires, intake leaks, cooling problems, and fuel-system faults before tuning.

Pops, bangs, two-step, and catalytic converters

Exhaust hardware has a big effect on volume. Catless headers produce a much louder result, but they are not required for the multi-map tune itself.

Aggressive pops and ignition-cut effects can send unburned fuel into the exhaust. That can overheat and damage a catalytic converter, potentially melting its core and restricting exhaust flow. Cars retaining catalytic converters should keep aggressive sound settings off. Removing the cats does not make aggressive settings harmless to the engine or exhaust.

Removing required emissions equipment is prohibited for U.S. road use. Choose exhaust hardware and settings appropriate to the vehicle's lawful use.

Pump gas and ethanol maps

Maps can be prepared for different specified fuels, including supported ethanol blends. We agree on the blend and fuel-system requirements for your setup before preparing that map.

Each fuel map expects the fuel it was built for. Match the fuel in the tank to the selected map; ethanol-blend maps use a specified blend rather than automatic blend detection.
